Painting Small, Teaches Control

As a representational painter, there are many benefits to making a small painting. The reasons why I made the work above, was to practice brush control. Developing sensitivity to brush strokes is crucial for anyone wanting to get into portraiture. Personally, I suffer every time I make a small painting. It is difficult for me to keep the drawing/panes under control when painting that small. In effort to give myself a greater challenge, I would force myself to increase the "appropriate" brush size for the areas where I was painting. Although this painting is is progress, I thing its turning out to be a decent self-portrait after all.
